Virgin and extra virgin olive oil worth the price

what’s the difference between virgin and evoo extra virgin olive oil? Here the answer from Sheah Rarback.

Q: Is there a difference in virgin olive oil that makes it worth the higher price?

A: There are some food products where the less expensive choice is just fine, but that is not the case with olive oil. There are two reasons for purchasing virgin or extra virgin olive oil. Let’s start with nutrition. It is well established that the monounsaturated fatty acids in olive oil have a positive effect on heart health by helping to lower LDL cholesterol levels. All types of olive oil provide these healthy fatty acids. New research published in the September 2006 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine revealed that there is more to the story. This study reported that virgin olive oil contains polyphenols a type of antioxidant. The men in this study with the highest intake of polyphenols had the greatest increase in their good HDL cholesterol levels and the biggest decline in the ”bad” LDL cholesterol.
