BORDER olive oil producer Gooramadda Olives has won one of the most coveted industry awards of the year, the Carol L’Heureux Award for Best Oil, at the 10th National Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards.
Proprietors Kathy and Jos Weemaes, who have been producing oil since 2001, also took out the first prize for class 1: single estate grown oil.
“It’s fantastic to achieve peer and industry recognition for our oil,” Mr Weemaes said.
We knew that we had a very special oil, which is why we entered it in the national awards.
“We produced our oil, known as UC13, from California queen olives, which are normally table olives and as such produce a very low yield of oil — but what it does produce is very good.”
Gooramadda Olives, between Rutherglen and Wodonga, processes its olives onsite into extra virgin olive oil and table olives and sell through its cellar door.
