I have heard that one should only buy olive oil in a can and not in glass, especially transparent glass.

I have not been able to find extra virgin olive in a can.  Sometimes I find it in colored glass bottles but not in cans.

Any comments or sources?

Hi and welcome here  Wink

There is no problem with olive oil in glass bottle even the transparent if you don't leave it under the sun, you might want to keep your olive oil in your kitchen cabinet.

Store your olive Oil in colored bottle (green, brown) and you will be fine.

Come back and let us know if you have other questions.

Take care

Yes, I agree with Claude he is completely right,

Olive oil in just bout any container will stay fresh as long as you can keep it sealed from oxygen and away from the sun in a cupboard or pantry is idle, you can also use wine preservation which fills the air inside your container with nitrogen and CO2 which is healthier for the oil, and will keep it fresher for longer, this article should help with your answer it is from my website, http://www.italianoliveoilblog.com/italian-olive-oil/preserving-italian-olive-oil
I hope this has helped  Wink
