Boundary Bend vying for the title of Australia’s top farm exporter
By Martin Watters,
A LARA-based olive oil giant could become Australia’s top farm exporter eights months on from bracing for a potential $5 million disaster.
Boundary Bend limited is an agribusiness national finalist at this year’s Australian Export Awards after recently clinching the Victorian title.
The firm was Australia’s largest extra virgin olive oil supplier and the country’s biggest olive grove manager with more than 2.5 million trees across almost 3000ha in the state’s northwest.
The firm was also the country’s largest olive oil exporter to more than 15 countries.
The accolades come only eight months after the Lara operations moved into damage control, sacking 20 workers and bracing for $5 million in losses after the abolition of Federal Government tax concessions.
Earlier this year the Government announced it would scrap certain horticultural tax deductions, sparking outrage in the forestry and farming sectors.
But this was put aside yesterday when Boundary Bend executive chairman Robert McGavin announced the national award tilt from the firm’s Lara operations.
In a release yesterday Austrade said 451 company entrants had been whittled down to 79 finalists vying for the category and overall export titles.
The awards will be announced at a gala presentation next Thursday.
Home curing Olives from Ken Churches

Each year we get many calls from folks asking how they can cure olives. The process is actually very simple and yields a delicious treat. There are a surprising number of olive trees growing in the foothill area. Many are being farmed for the production of olive oil, but there are also many being grown in home landscapes. Rather than let all of the fruit go to waste, why not try curing them yourself?
Spanish olive oil futures market seeks speculators
By Elena Moya,
Edited by Chris Johnson,
The world’s only olive oil futures market, based in Spain, plans to grow rapidly next year and hopes the increased liquidity will attract large speculators, its general director said on Tuesday.
Ana Fernandez told Reuters she expected financial institutions to join the organisation, based in Jaen, the Spanish province that produces almost half of the country’s olive oil, from next year.
She expects daily traded volume to rise to 400 tonnes — about 400,000 litres — from 270 tonnes a day now.
“That level will attract Spanish and foreign brokers, anybody who has a commodities book,” Fernandez told Reuters.
“An Italian bank is already preparing the paperwork to become a member.”
She declined to identify the bank.
The market, which started three and half years ago, now has around 20 members, including Banco Popular (POP.MC: Quote, Profile, Research) and savings bank La Caixa, which can trade from their screens, and more than 200 clients, mostly farmers that want to fix a price.
