Spain reports 34 pct rise in olive oil output

Reporting by Julia Hayley,
Edited by Bernard Halloran,

Spain produced 34 percent more olive oil in the season just ended, or 1.11 million tonnes in total, the Agriculture Ministry said on Wednesday.

“That represents 8 percent more than the average for the last four seasons,” it said.

Olive farmers also produced 500,000 tonnes of table olives in the season that runs from September to the end of April, 17 percent more than the year before, when the crop was hit by drought.

Exports of olive oil up to the end of April rose 63 percent compared with last year to 282,000 tonnes while the internal market accounted for 304,000 tonnes. Stocks now stand at 785,000 tonnes, the ministry said in a statement.

Spain is easily the world’s biggest producer of olive oil.

Drought good news for olive growers

By Bernard Carpinter,

The continuing drought in Hawke’s Bay is driving farmers to despair – but is excellent news for olive growers.

While pastoral farmers are suffering, olive growers are celebrating large quantities, top quality and increased prices for their 2007 harvest.

“The quality of the olives coming off the trees at the moment is quite simply outstanding,” Rose Gresson of the Telegraph Hill company said yesterday. The harvest was now in full swing and showing the benefits of the unusually dry and warm weather, she said.

With cold nights following the warm days, the olives had developed extra flavour and oil content.

As a result, Telegraph Hill was paying $2.50 a kilogram for table olives to its 20 growers, well up on last year’s figure of just under $2.

Both table olives, which would go on sale in about six months’ time, and olive oils would be of top quality this season, Mrs Gresson said.

Hawke’s Bay processes about 550 tonnes of olives a year.

Olives – The Healthy Alternative To Potato Chips!

Have you ever relaxed in an easy chair watching a TV show while eating from a large bag of potato chips? I’ll bet you have! Most of us have at one time or another. It’s OK occasionally, but if you eat fatty things too often… well, I guess I don’t really need to spell it out for you.

In Spain they have a wonderful tradition in their bars. When you order a drink you get a small plate of tapas placed in front of you. Tapas can be any kind of tasty tidbit. But very often it will be olives, maybe a dozen or so at a time.

It’s a great habit to get into, relaxing with a glass of something pleasant and enjoying some fresh olives. It’s a tradition that very country should adopt. So, next time you sit down to watch TV, reach for the olives and not the chips – you’ll be glad you did!
