Is seafood better than Olive Oil?

Researchers have found that a diet rich in fish, seafood, and grains is better at preventing heart disease than a diet containing olive oil, nuts, and avocados called monounsaturated fats. Although both types of fats are healthy, people should probably include more of the first than the second in their diet to keep a healthy heart, the scientists say.

Iran to join international olive treaty

President Ahmadinejad has presented a bill to parliament under which Iran will join an International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives.

The Ministry of Agriculture proposed the initiative to the cabinet which endorsed Iran’s accession to the international treaty under the auspices of the United Nations.

The Iranian parliament is yet to ratify the bill and it aims to preserve olive species and facilitate the export of olives and olive oil to international markets.

Olives are currently cultivated in 18 provinces across Iran and production reached 65,000 tons for the year ending in March 2006. Some 50 percent of olives produced annually is canned.

An olive cultivation expansion scheme has been underway for 15 years and has received favorable funds in recent years.

Some 6,000 hectares of orchards in Gilan and Zanjan have been set aside for olive cultivation.

Anglesey cooking oil producer, Calon Lân, has planted 50 olive trees next to a vineyard on the northern coast of the island.

The grove, believed to be the most northerly in Europe, aims to reap the benefits of our milder winters and the Mediterranean- style mini heat-waves that are now a feature of summers.

The first UK olive grove was planted last year in Devon and a second was planted in Shropshire earlier this year.

Olive trees in Florida? You bet

Text/photos by Kathy Edenhofer (Master gardener),

If you are looking for a unique item for your landscape, here is something that might peak your interest. Tucked away in Citra is a little jewel of a tree farm owned and operated by Tony and Shirley Valenza. At the Olive Branch Tree Farm they grow and sell olive trees, olives and olive oil. The Farm currently has more than 3,000 trees in stock.

The Valenza family has been growing olive trees in California for more than 80 years and decided to see if any of the varieties would survive and produce olives in the Central Florida area. They have test grown many varieties in the last five years and found at least three that do well in our area. They are Arbequina, Mission and Manzanillo. All three are self-pollinating, cold hardy to at least 12 degrees, and are pest and disease resistant.
