Scotland:Borders farmers take on Tuscany
Farmers in the Borders have hatched a plan to tackle the Italians in the world of culinary oil production.
They have launched their own extra virgin rapeseed oil – designed to challenge the popular products from the olive groves of Tuscany.
Oleifera is produced by Borderfields Ltd a group of farmers in the Scottish Borders and north Northumberland.
They claim that the finished product has a “magnificent golden colour and nutty flavour”.
The move is part of the farmers’ plans to expand their businesses into new markets.
The group claims its cold-pressed oil has less than half the fat and ten times the omega 3 oils of its Mediterranean counterparts.
Raisio take Benecol into olive oil
By Stephen Daniells,
The presence of Benecol in Portugal is increasing with the announcement that the cholesterol-reducing ingredient is being introduced to olive oil, said to capture all the growth in the fats markets in Portugal by 2010.
Mikko Laavainen, vice president, sales & marketing confirmed to NutraIngredients.com that this is the first time that the ingredient has been incorporated in olive oil, and that the company will be looking to extend this to other markets outside of Portugal.
“This is a new opportunity and a new possibility for consumers,” said Laavainen.

Mediterranean diet just as good as low fat
By Marilynn Marchione,
A study shows both are good choices to lower risk for those who have had a heart attack, stroke or other cardiac problems.
NEW ORLEANS – A Mediterranean-style diet high in olive oil and other “healthy” fats is just as good as the classic American Heart Association low-fat diet for the 8 million Americans who have suffered a heart attack and want to prevent a repeat, new research suggests.
People on either diet had one-third the risk of suffering another heart attack, a stroke, death or other heart problem compared with heart patients eating in the usual way, the study found. The results of the study were presented Sunday at an American College of Cardiology conference.
