Olive Oil Market during this Recession

With the global economy on rocky ground, sales of olive oil may be cloudy as the market shows signs of reaching maturity, according to market research publisher Packaged Facts new report, “Market Trend: Olive Oil in the U.S., 3rd Edition.

According to the report, the market for olive oil in the United States grew at a compound annual growth rate of 7 percent between 2004 and 2008, much in part to U.S. consumers embracing olive oil’s health benefits and culinary versatility; however, in volume terms growth was more muted in recent years as the market showed some signs of nearing market maturity.

The reported examined current market, trends, major marketers and brands, and consumer preferences and presents a concise, thought provoking analysis of various aspects of the industry and provides a forecast for the market through 2013.

Olives NZ step downs welcomed

The New Zealand olive oil industry’s governing body has imploded in the wake of a controversial choice for the nation’s best-in-show olive oil award.

marlborough-olive-grower-mark-heardFour executive members of Olives New Zealand, including the president, have resigned in the fallout from a meeting held to thrash out concerns surrounding the awards.

The body represents more than 270 members and oversees olive processing, marketing, science and research, harvesting and grower advice.

Head judge, and owner of Waiheke Olive Oil Company, Margaret Edwards, was accused by critics of a conflict of interest after she was on a panel of judges that awarded her own olive oil first prize at the 2008 Olives New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards last October.

At the Greytown meeting last month Mrs Edwards admitted she had broken a rule that she had implemented four months before the awards which banned judges from assessing their own oil and said she would return the award.

Pakistan: Italians keen to invest in olive oil production

Italian investors are keen to invest in olive oil production in Pakistan, said Italian Ambassador Vincenzo Prati while addressing the National Conference on “Olive oil Production in Pakistan: result and way forward” at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) on Wednesday.

He said there was a dire need to establish interaction between chambers of commerce of Pakistan and Italy to improve olive oil business between the two countries. “Pakistan is the biggest importer of edible oil and its economy bears a great burden annually on import of this valuable commodity,” he added.

“Olive plantation is not an easy task. It is not just to plant a tree. If you do not have suitable soil it cannot be planted. But Pakistan has been gifted with natural climate and soil for olive plantation and Potohar, NWFP & FATA are potential areas for olive production,” he added.

Food and Agriculture Secretary Muhammad Ziaur Rehamn said Pakistan was pre-dominantly an agriculture region. The contribution of agriculture to GDP in Pakistan is nearly 21 percent, he said.
