An English olive…. but don’t mix the Martinis just yet
Soaring spring temperatures have created a boom in sales of olive trees in Britain.
With parts of the country enjoying highs of up to 16C (61F), there is a growing demand from gardeners for Mediterranean plants usually found in warmer climates.
But don’t start mixing the Martinis in celebration quite yet – the great British weather is famously unpredictable and, if it turns bad, our olives will suffer.
Dutch distribution company Plant Line has imported about 400 trees to the UK this year. It delivers to 200 garden centres, mostly in the south.
Italy: discovering olive harvesting and olive pressing
By di-ve.com,
Every Sunday at 1pm on One TV & di-ve.com, Avventura fil-Kampanja will be continuing discovering olive harvesting and olive pressing for the production of Extra Virgin Olive Oil in Tuscany.
We will be seeing harvest with the use of modern machinery meaning that just one olive tree is harvested in 5 minutes. However, we will also be seeing the picking of olives by hand which takes more than half an hour per tree. This makes a big difference for big companies financially. Obviously, we will be also experiencing the pressing of olives with the cold press system.

Akhisar becomes Turkey’s biggest olive production center
By Ali Riza Karasu, Ramazan Sari Akhisar,
The Akhisar district of Manisa has surpassed Gemlik, a district in the province of Bursa, as Turkey’s biggest table olive producer. Formerly known for tobacco production, Akhisar has become the country’s olive production center.
Tobacco fields have been replaced by olive groves. Some 5 million olive trees planted in the district have resulted in the establishment of new industrial plants. Over 280 olive and olive oil factories have been built in the last decade. In 2006 alone 63 factories were established, convincing district officials to set up an organized industrial zone. Akhisar became the center of Turkey’s table olive production in the early 1990s.
