Olive oil rubs fleas out

Dear Dr. Fox: One year, there was a flea infestation in our area. A friend told me if I rubbed my dog’s coat and skin with olive oil, the fleas and itching would go away.

I tried it, and the constant itching and fleas disappeared as if by magic.

Dear M.M.: Thanks for the very simple and surprising anti-flea treatment — cheap and harmless, indeed. And, no doubt, the dog’s coat had a nice shine.

Olives contain several botanical compounds that are beneficial to the skin, hair and immune system when ingested, and, like most plants, they may contain mild insect repellants that are harmless when ingested in moderate amounts.

Olives can survive chilly S.F. summers if they keep on the sunny side of life

Q: I live in the Bernal Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. Would olive trees survive the wind up here? Can they be containerized?

A: Olive trees can tolerate considerable wind, and you can see some growing in Holly Park on Bernal Hill. What olives don’t like much is a cold summer, and since San Francisco’s summer winds are usually rather cold, give your olive tree as much protection as you can. The best location would be on the sunny south side of a house or other structure. It would also be best if there was something on the west or northwest side of the site, such as houses or big shrubs, to block some of the prevailing cold wind, but not so close that they put your olive into afternoon shade too soon.

La Tunisie est quatrième producteur et troisième exportateur au niveau mondial d’huile d’olive après l’Espagne, l’Italie et la Grèce. Ce produit emblème de la Tunisie représente une part équivalente à 25 % environ des quantités échangées sur le plan international avec une prédominance pour le vrac.

L’exportation en vrac de l’huile d’olive tunisienne, même si elle garantit au pays des recettes en devises, elle lui fait perdre une image de marque et une renommée qui s’avère aussi importante que les revenus matériels. C’est pour cette raison que ce produit est appelé à relever plusieurs défis dans l’avenir.

Principal challenge : faire de la Tunisie une provenance reconnue et appréciée d’huile d’olive conditionnée, à très haute valeur ajoutée.

A California-Style Harvest Celebration

The captivating aromas of lavender and eucalyptus and the musky perfume of just-picked olives would lead one to believe she was in the south of France, or on a hillside in Tuscany. But this is Santa Barbara, California, a region known for producing some of the world’s finest olive oils.

Imagine the scene if you will: Midday production stops, just for an hour, and a beautiful countryside table is set just west of an olive grove. A simple feast, themed around the jewels of the harvest, is served. A fall green salad, tossed with an orange and basil vinaigrette, is followed by a large platter of fried trout and olive-oil-roasted baby potatoes and asparagus. Cheese boards loaded with treats and hearty loaves of bread round out the menu. The big treat of the day? Homemade vanilla olive oil ice cream and cookies, the perfect way to end this fall celebration.

Vineyard to produce own olive oil

Britain’s balmy weather has led a Shropshire vineyard to create one of Britain’s first olive groves – normally found in sweltering Mediterranean climes.

Wroxeter Roman Vineyard is making the most of global warming and plans to start planting a commercial olive grove to make Shropshire’s own extra virgin olive oil.

Martin Millington, who runs the vineyard, visited the town of Pistoia in the Tuscan heartlands to collect 305 olive trees from the Innocenti Virgilio company.

He hopes to harvest his first crop in a year’s time and then be up to full production in five or six years.
