Two new award-winning Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oils, from the family which built one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest horticultural companies, have arrived at Sainsbury Supermarkets just as they scoop yet another accolade from industry giants. ollo Fresh & Fruity was last week presented with a Gran Mantion Diploma in Italy, at the inaugural International Olive Oil Awards, ARMONIA, which acknowledged the superior chemical composition of the product.

OLIVE OIL TASTING IS AN ART.

Among the many activities at Madrid Fusion were olive oil- and wine-tasting sessions. As different as wine and olive oil are, they also share many similarities. And if there are wine connoisseurs, there are also olive connoisseurs.

But why must one taste olive oil when it is mainly used as an ingredient and hardly ever consumed on its own? Because, like wine vintages, vast differences and many factors determine and dictate one finished product from the other.

The type and blend of olives, growing techniques, fruit maturity and harvest, soil type, climate, geographic latitude, production, pressing, storage—all of these play vital roles in the production of high-quality olive oil.

California: SBOlive to open packing plant in Santa Maria

Olive company to open packing plant in S.M.

Officials with the Santa Barbara Olive Co. were set to purchase a building and expand their company south to Oxnard – until they saw what Santa Maria had to offer.

Now, the firm is looking to take possession of a building on Skyway Drive for a food processing and packaging plant that is slated to create 30 new jobs with the company, said Craig Makela, president of Santa Barbara Olive Co.

Opened in 1982 by Makela and his wife Cindy, the company started in a garage and has grown to see its products sold in all 50 states at major grocery chains and specialty shops as well as featured at restaurants such as Spago and Tavern on the Green.

Picking olives in Kandanos, Crete

Olive trees are an integral part of the Cretan landscape and a source of life and health to Cretans, symbolizing peace and fertility. So, on a sunny Sunday in January we went out to pick olives. My mother, Katharina, had planned this day for a long time. We were invited to pick olives at Eytyxis Daskalakis’s, a good friend of the family, but we were determined to go first to the beautiful village of Kandanos because that’s where the best table olives come from.
