Croatia: Olive harvest enough for 51,000 hectolitres of olive oil
According to estimates of Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development they are expecting a harvest of 38,000 tons of olives or 51,000 hectolitres of olive oil in Croatia.
The best harvest is expected in Dubrovnik-Neretva county and the worst in Sibenik-Knin and Zadar counties, especially on the islands where the expected harvest is up to 30 per cent smaller then last year’s.
This year’s drought had damaged the most olive groves on the islands, where in some cases there was no rain in three months. On the area of Dubrovnik-Neretva county agricultural drought was declared in districts of Vela Luka, Lumbarda, Smokvica and surrounding of the city of Korcula.

Slippery problem for New Zealand olive grower
Olive oil producers are concerned that one of the gold medal winning oils in last year’s Olives New Zealand Awards is produced by one of the judges.
Marlborough olive grower Mark Heard says there is a lot to be gained by winning an award as it makes a product more attractive to stockists. He has tried talking with Olives New Zealand which runs the awards about what he sees as a conflict of interest but without success.
“They just don’t seem to get it, that it’s unethical to judge your own products in a competition.”
Mr Heard says Olives New Zealand has told him it has done nothing wrong but he has sought legal advice and has been told he has grounds to take the matter to court.
Mr Heard would like to see Olives New Zealand’s executive resign over the matter.

Gold and Silver Medals Awarded to California Olive Ranch Extra Virgin Olive Oils
Arbequina, Arbosana, and Koroneiki Recognized at the First Annual California Olive Oil Council Competition
California Olive Ranch (COR), North America’s largest olive oil producer, received three medals from The California Olive Oil Council (COOC) for their 2008 harvest extra virgin olive oils: Both the single varieties Arbequina and Arbosana earned gold and COR’s single variety estate Koroneiki received a silver medal.
The COOC announced its silver and gold awards at its annual meeting held in Sonoma on February 28. The competition drew over 65 producers and 106 oils. A blind tasting was conducted, using the Mario Solinas Assessment, an internationally preferred method for scoring. 13 trained COOC judges from the organization’s certification tasting panel evaluated the oils.
Two Mediterranean Olive Oil Families Form an Alliance
Over 90% of all the olive oil in the world comes from groves in the Mediterranean region. Now two of the most prominent families from the region, Devico and Moreno, have formed an alliance to bring more high quality olive oil to the United States and the world.
Among the key beneficiaries of the alliance is Pompeian, Inc. of Baltimore which began importing the product in 1906 and has been owned by the Moreno family since 1975. Pompeian, which is recognized as the first national brand of olive oil in America, is among the best selling brands in the country and a major innovator with new products such as OlivExtra Plus with Omega-3 DHA.
The Morenos are leaders in food producing in Spain and are well known for the Musa brand of mayonnaise and condiments. In addition, they have gained renown in the country’s retail industry based on their lumberyards and building supply centers. Spain is the top producer of olive oil in the world, so it was natural for the Moreno family to get into the business. Their acquisition of Pompeian proved to be most timely, shortly before the Mediterranean Diet began to catch hold in America, both in culinary and healthful-eating terms.
