Indigenous olive oil project reaches an ‘interesting stage’
Olive pressing increases 30 times in 10 years!
By Joanna Ripard,
Retired jeweller Sam Cremona’s brainchild, the Project for the Revival of the Indigenous Maltese Olive (Primo), is at an “interesting stage” and is just three years away from its interim target of 10,000 trees producing the Bidnija olive.
“We need to have 30,000 trees producing olives all over Malta to claim we have an industry,” Mr Cremona explains in the grove at his Wardija home. “But it is coming along nicely. Once the industry truly gets off the ground, it will encourage more people to plant trees and the industry will grow even further.
“When the product is well and truly on the market, I hope there will be an environmental revolution in Malta. I like to think there will come a time when we will run out of land to plant more trees. In Roman times, Malta produced great quantities of oil for export. It was an economic cornerstone; that is why half our old villages and towns are named after the olive.”

Olive oil to show country of origin
By Zoë Casey,
All olive oils, from Spain’s golden nutty olive oils to Italy’s dark green grassy-flavoured olive oils, will be labelled with their country of origin from 1 July 2009, the European Commission said today.
Currently, olive oils are labelled with their country of origin on a voluntary basis, but Mariann Fischer Boel, the European commissioner for agriculture, said that this system did not provide enough consumers with geographic “traceability” information.
Fischer Boel also argued that the new regulations will also benefit producers by providing them with a “marketing tool” in a similar way that ‘extra virgin’ and ‘virgin’ labels are used to indicate the quality of the oil.
Oil produced from olives from different EU countries will be labelled “blend of Community oils”. Oils partly derived from olives from non-EU producers – such as Palestine – will say “blend of Community and non-Community oils”.
Typically, Spanish olive oil is golden in colour with a nutty flavour, Italian olive oil is dark green with a herbal aroma, while Greek olive oil is usually green in colour with a strong flavour. French olive oil is typically light golden in colour and is milder than other varieties.
sos cuetara targets 150 million eur from disposals
Spanish food company SOS Cuetara (SOS.MC) expects to make between 100 million and 150 million euros (($125.8-$188.8 million) from the sale of further non-core assets, a company official said on Thursday.
SOS is in the process of selling non-core businesses such as its olive oil, vinegar and sauce brands as part of efforts to pay off its 650 million euro acquisition of Italian olive oil group Bertolli last year.
In December the company sold its Nutrexpa biscuits unit for 215 million euros, and has just finalised the sale of its 60 percent of sweets division Intervan to partner Pascual Carrion for 6 million euros, the official said.
At 1226 GMT, SOS Cuetara’s shares were down 9.8 percent at 4.15 euros, compared with a 2.4 percent fall on Madrid’s general index .

South Australian olive growers to pay new levy
A new levy paid by South Australian olive growers will help promote and further develop the industry.
From this harvest, growers will pay a $4 levy on each tonne of fruit they produce.
Olives South Australia president Lisa Rowntree says it will increase by a dollar a year for the next three years to eventually reach $6 a tonne.
“It was done like this to soften the blow of introducing something like this to try and make it a little easier for growers to deal with,” she said.
“We’re hoping that with the $4 a tonne we’re not entirely sure exactly how much money, we’ve got estimates of how much money that will raise for the industry, we hope that with that money that’s raised, we can start to demonstrate value for it.”
Money raised by the levy will be used for marketing and promotion, branding and bio-security activities.
