California olive crop near wipeout, Bartlett pear crop up sharply

California olive crop forecast is for 50,000 tons, down 65 percent from last year’s crop of 142,000 tons.

Bearing acreage is estimated at 31,000 for a yield of 1.61 tons per acre, down 64 percent from last year’s yield. Olive growers across California are reporting that the 2006 olive crop is the worst crop in many years. If realized the crop forecast of 50,000 tons would be the smallest since 1981, when 44,900 tons were produced.

Olive harvest the pits?

While prices are good, the outlook for this year’s olive crop is less than ideal, according to the Olive Growers Council of California.


While this year’s olive prices may be reasonably good, that doesn’t mean it will be a good year if there isn’t enough fruit to cover the cost, said Adin Hester of the Olive Growers Council of California.

Olives bring new tastes to summer salads

Salads can make great eating most of the year, but they have a special place on summertime menus.

It’s easy enough to throw into a salad whatever’s at hand, but it’s also fun to try specific combinations of ingredients for a change of pace.

Olives in various forms give salads a flavor lift, antipasto-style. Here are a couple of salad variations using olives to serve at the dining table, or for al fresco eating and picnics. These are tasty enough to serve as antipasti but substantial enough for a light entree.

Olive growers dealt a losing hand

The full impact of the February freeze on California’s 2006 olive crop wasn’t revealed until early June, after the bloom. Now olive growers realize that the damage was extensive-to both trees and bloom.

“I think that we can reasonably say that the Manzanillos, in Tehama County anyway, are pretty much shot,” says Cody McCoy, field representative for Bell Carter Foods in Corning.

I made 15 and I ate them all without offering anyone else the smallest bit. What a dreadful personality I have sometimes. But I can live with that.
