Central Valley olive harvest in question
- Olive growers assess crop size
- May not justify harvesting
This year might go into the books as the year there was no olive harvest in the Central Valley, at least for some growers.
A farmers’ group, the Olive Growers Council in Visalia, says many of the state’s groves carry extremely light crops.
In coming weeks, Central Valley olive farmers will be assessing whether their trees hold enough fruit to justify harvesting.
[Australia] Booklet gives overview of olives
A PROMOTIONAL booklet for Victoria’s burgeoning olive industry was launched at Yarrawonga yesterday.
Victoria’s Agriculture Minister Bob Cameron launched Victorian Olive Industry Overview at Rich Glen Olives.
“The Victorian olive industry is growing rapidly with more than 2000 producers supplying domestic and export markets,” Mr Cameron said.
“More than $300 million has been invested in Victoria’s olive industry and during the past couple of years Victoria has made up about half of the national crush.”
Mr Cameron said Victorian Olive Industry Overview would be a valuable tool for the Victorian olive industry to use as it sought new markets and promoted itself in key developing markets, including Asia.

[Spain] In Nyack, serrano ham and Basque olives
La Boqueria in Spain is a bustling open-air marketplace where shoppers can find cheese, fish, meats and other delicacies.
La Boqueria in Nyack feels like an open-air marketplace where shoppers can find cheese, fish, meats and other delicacies.
“We have a roof and walls, but with this open feel I’m trying to create the feel of Spain’s La Boqueria here in Nyack,” says Ned Visser, the owner.
Visser renovated a former garage to open the gourmet shop, the first of its kind in the area to focus on Spanish and Latino products. And for culinary inspiration, he’s looking not only to Spain but to the wider Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world.
Mediterranean beats low-fat diet for heart health
By Amy Norton,
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Mediterranean-style diets, rich in healthy fats from olive oil or nuts, may be better for the heart than low-fat regimens, a new study shows.
Spanish researchers found that the traditional Mediterranean diet bested a low-fat diet in helping older adults improve their cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. The findings, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, add to evidence that diets rich in healthy fats offer a better heart prescription than diets that limit fat altogether.
