Australia: ACT region produces the good oil

Olive growers and distributors meeting in Canberra over the last two days believe that there is plenty of room for growth in the local industry.

The Australian Olive Expo has heard it should be viable to produce a local extra virgin brand in and around the ACT.

Australian Olive Association president Paul Miller says the area produces a superior product.

“Canberra is a relatively cool climate, and that confers additional flavour and colour to the olive oil,” he said.

“That in turn means that oil is actually of better quality.”

Sarah Palin and the olive fruit fly research

last week, Sarah Palin gave her first policy speech, urging the federal government to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Along the way, she too attacked science earmarks by claiming that the shortfall needed to fully fund the act was less money than was allocated to projects that have “little or nothing to do with the public good. Things like fruit fly research in Paris, France.”

Fruit flies can be made to seem like a silly thing to spend money on. But Palin was referring to research at a lab in France supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The subject is the olive fruit fly, which threatens the California olive industry. The U.S. is working with France because that nation has dealt with an olive fruit fly infestation for decades, far longer than California.

Maybe Palin also should have been told that a University of North Carolina fruit fly study last year demonstrated that a protein called neurexin is required for nerve-cell connections to form and function correctly. That discovery may lead to advances in understanding, among other things, autism, one of the childhood disorders that has been stressed by the McCain-Palin campaign.

Olive Oil Cops – Italian police can taste fake olive oil

Twenty members of the Italian NAS food piracy unit have graduated from a special course laid on by the Italian National Olive Oil Association Unaprol.

Police said the group graduated from a course taught by the National Olive Oil Association Unaprol that included instruction on how to taste fake extra-virgin olive oil and how to determine the geographical origin of olive oil by subtle differences in taste, ANSA reported Friday.

“This initiative will strengthen the defense of the quality of one of the symbols of the Mediterranean diet,” Unaprol head Massimo Gargano said.

Gargano said training the task force would send “an unequivocal signal” that oil producers are dedicated to ensuring quality.

Olive oil producers in Italy won a battle this year to make sourcing a mandatory part of the labeling on bottles.
