A small coast, an ancient tradition — and one of the oldest olive trees in Europe.
Montenegro’s short Adriatic coast, around Bar, carries a deep olive tradition and one of the olive world’s living wonders: the Stara Maslina, the “Old Olive,” an olive tree estimated at well over two thousand years old. The dominant variety here is the hardy Žutica, which gives a fruity, characterful oil and a traditional table olive.
Montenegro’s output is small and mostly local, so its oil is rarely exported — but the Stara Maslina draws visitors from around the world, a reminder of how long this fruit has been cultivated on the Adriatic. The Montenegrin olives we’ve covered so far are below.
