Olive Oil: Liquid gold in Gerber, CA

By Karen McIntyre,

More than 150 years after the Gold Rush, gold is still being pumped out of Tehama County – well, liquid gold, said Jane Flynn, owner of Pacific Farms, which produces Pacific Sun Olive Oil.

Using the “liquid gold” slogan was one idea presented during a tour of Pacific Farms Tuesday to discuss ways to market Tehama County as an olive oil destination.

Olive oil producers and supporters joined the Tehama Economic Development Corporation Olive Oil Planning Committee to kick off TEDC’s marketing campaign. The committee’s goal is to brand Tehama County like N

apa County did with wine and eventually have visitors travel to the area to visit olive oil plants daily, Board President Bill Moule said.

The olive oil industry is flourishing and has a lot of potential in Tehama County, said Dewey Lucero, owner of Lucero Olive Oil in Corning.

Less than 1 percent of the olive oil consumed in the U.S. is milled in the U.S. But Lucero said the number of gallons produced in America is expected to quadruple in the next three or four years to 2 million gallons annually.

Lucero said he doubled the amount of olive oil his company sold this year compared to last year, from 4,000 to 8,000 gallons.

Of the olive oil produced in the U.S., much of it comes from the north state.
