Can You Grow Olives in Britain?

Every warm summer brings the same prediction: climate change will make southern England olive country. The tree will indeed grow there, and does. Whether it will ever fruit commercially depends on a requirement almost nobody mentions.

There is an olive tree in a pot outside a pub in Cornwall that has been alive for fifteen years, and every summer somebody photographs it and declares the Mediterranean has moved north. It is a lovely tree. It has never produced a usable crop and almost certainly never will. Understanding why is a small masterclass in what a fruiting tree actually needs, and it is not what most people guess.

Surviving is the easy part

Olives are far hardier than their reputation suggests. A mature, well-established tree tolerates frost down to figures that would surprise most gardeners, and mild southern British winters rarely kill an olive outright. Sheltered gardens in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and London grow them perfectly happily as ornamentals, and have for decades.

What kills olives in Britain is usually not cold but cold plus wet. The olive evolved on thin, sharply drained, stony ground with dry summers and modest winter rain. Waterlogged roots through a mild, sodden British winter cause far more losses than a hard frost. Anyone planting one should think about drainage before they think about temperature.

The requirement nobody mentions: chill

Here is the part that upends the climate-change assumption. The olive needs a genuinely cool winter to flower. Flower buds are induced by a period of chilling — commonly discussed as something like ten weeks with temperatures in a moderate cool band, with the most effective chilling around the low teens Celsius and useful accumulation roughly between 7 and 15 °C. Without enough of it, the tree simply produces vegetative growth and no flowers, and no flowers means no fruit no matter how glorious the summer.

This is why olives fail in genuinely tropical climates, and it is why a warming Britain is not straightforwardly better for olives. Milder winters reduce chill accumulation. A tree can therefore be perfectly healthy, perfectly unfrozen, and perfectly barren. It is the same mechanism that costs growers in Texas and southern Spain a crop after an unusually warm winter.

Why the summer, not the winter, decides it

Even supposing a British olive flowers and sets fruit, it then has to ripen. Ripening is a slow accumulation of oil in the flesh, and it requires sustained warmth through summer and into autumn. Britain’s problem is not the peak temperature of a heatwave ; it is the total heat accumulated across a whole season, which remains far below what a Mediterranean autumn delivers. Fruit that fails to ripen has little oil and no flavour worth pressing.

Add a wet, cool late spring at flowering, which suppresses fruit set even when the buds appear, and you have a crop that is unreliable at best. That is why the occasional British olive harvest is a charming news story rather than an industry. Meanwhile the varieties that have travelled successfully to new regions — Arbequina above all — went to places with hot dry summers and cool dry winters, not to places with mild wet everything.

If you want to grow one anyway

  • Plant for drainage first. Raised, gritty, sharply drained ground beats a sheltered spot in heavy clay.
  • Choose a mature specimen if you can. Established trees are far hardier than young ones.
  • Expect an ornamental, not an orchard. Flowers and fruit are a bonus, not a plan.
  • Do not overfeed late in the season — soft new growth is what frost damages.
  • Pot-grown trees can be moved under shelter for the worst of a wet winter, which is often the deciding factor.

Will olive trees survive a British winter?

In the milder south and south-west, usually yes. Mature trees are reasonably frost-hardy. The bigger risk is a waterlogged root zone through a wet winter rather than the cold itself.

Why do British olive trees rarely fruit?
