Olive Oil from Istria Becomes EU Product with Protected Origin

Extra-virgin olive oil from Slovenian Istria became on Tuesday the first Slovenian agriculture product to be listed in the EU register of agricultural products and foodstuffs with protected geographical indications and designations of origin.

This year, 44 olive growers who met the required oil quality and traceability standards can use the label. Oils containing at least 30% of olives of the “Istrska belica” sort can be labelled as products with protected designation of origin.

The label also requires specific chemical and taste parameters, as well as growing, pressing and storage procedures.
