A California-Style Harvest Celebration

The captivating aromas of lavender and eucalyptus and the musky perfume of just-picked olives would lead one to believe she was in the south of France, or on a hillside in Tuscany. But this is Santa Barbara, California, a region known for producing some of the world’s finest olive oils.

Imagine the scene if you will: Midday production stops, just for an hour, and a beautiful countryside table is set just west of an olive grove. A simple feast, themed around the jewels of the harvest, is served. A fall green salad, tossed with an orange and basil vinaigrette, is followed by a large platter of fried trout and olive-oil-roasted baby potatoes and asparagus. Cheese boards loaded with treats and hearty loaves of bread round out the menu. The big treat of the day? Homemade vanilla olive oil ice cream and cookies, the perfect way to end this fall celebration.
