DNA shows ancient ship carried olive oil, oregano

A cargo ship goes down off a Greek island. Twenty-four centuries later, scientists scrape the inside of its clay jars and read the DNA of what it carried: olive oil, herbs, probably wine. The wreck is a receipt for a trade that built the ancient world.

Every so often a shipwreck reminds us how old the olive-oil business really is. Divers find a field of clay jars — amphorae — on the seabed; researchers swab the residue baked into the porous clay and recover fragments of ancient DNA. Off Greece, one such analysis pointed to a cargo of olive oil and oregano, and probably wine. It is a small finding with a large meaning: proof, in molecules, that the Mediterranean was moving oil in bulk while Athens was still classical.

Why the amphora mattered

The unsung hero of ancient commerce is the pot. The amphora — a tall, two-handled clay jar with a pointed base — was the shipping container of its age: cheap, stackable in a hull, and sealable against the sea. Fill it with oil, plug it with clay or cork, stamp the shoulder with an origin mark, and you had a traceable unit of trade. Whole economies were built on these jars. Stand in the supermarket oil aisle and you are standing at the end of a very long line. What I love about these wrecks is how familiar they are. Strip away the centuries and you have a boat full of oil in stamped jars, an origin mark on the shoulder, and someone at the other end wanting to know it is the real thing and not cut.
