Training session on Olive cultivation held

Under Horticulture Technology Mission ” Standardization of Agro-Techniques for Olive” programme, a one-day training-cum-demonstration session of officers, field functionaries of Horticulture Department and progressive farmers of district Udhampur and Reasi was organized by the Scientists of Sher-I-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology, Jammu, here today. The Scientists who delivered lectures on “Olive Production Technology” and “Top Working Methods For Wild Olive” plantation to increase production and make the olive commercially viable included Dr. A.K. Tiku, Dr. M .K . Khushu, Dr. V.K. Kaul and Research Associate, Zia-ur-Rashid.

Dr. A.K. Tiku deliberated on the management practices and nutrition of olive including top-working methods to be adopted for successful commercial olive fruit production. To save the fruit from decay and increase production, he said 0.5 per cent Borax spray was essential during flowering season which should be done after 20 days of first inflorescence. Manual harvesting of ripened fruit was better to save the olive fruit from injury and wastage, he maintained.

Adding further, Dr. Tiku asserted that for getting Extra-Virgin Olive oil , the harvested fruit must be processed within 24 to 72 hours to get market approval and highest rates of Olive oil. He recommended “Side Veneer” grafting method as it was more successful that Bark Grafting method. Period from June 29 to July 10 was most suited for grafting purposes, he added.
Dr. Khushu spoke on the importance of environmental factors viz. temperature, rainfall, irrigation and sunshine.
Chief Horticulture Officer, Udhampur, Mr. J.L. Raina thanked the Scientists of SKUAST-Jammu for organizing such healthy interaction session with officers of his department and orchardists.
