Why it is so hard

The olive is tough and drought-tolerant, but it is not a tropical or true-desert plant. It generally needs a spell of winter cold to trigger flowering, dislikes high humidity and monsoon rain on the ripening fruit, and resents extreme summer heat. Rajasthan offers dryness in abundance but also blistering summers and a monsoon, so success hinges on choosing the right hardy cultivars — Barnea and other Israeli and Mediterranean selections bred for warm, dry conditions — and on precise irrigation. Drip is not a luxury here; it is the whole basis of the project, delivering measured water to each tree in a place with almost none to spare.

Patience and realism

Olives are a slow business anywhere. A newly planted tree takes several years to bear its first real fruit and longer to reach full yield, so a desert project like this is a decade-long bet, not a quick win. Early Rajasthan harvests did produce olives and even some locally pressed oil, which is a genuine achievement — but turning trial plots into a commercially meaningful industry, competing with cheap imports, is a far bigger and slower thing.
