The wild olive is not a different plant from the cultivated one; it is the same species, Olea europaea, in its untamed form, often called the oleaster. It is tough, drought-proof and long-lived, but its fruit is small, stony and almost useless for oil. Pakistan happens to own vast stands of it across the northern and western hills. The clever idea — pursued in state programmes for decades — is not to fell the wild trees and start again, but to graft fruiting European varieties onto them, so a ready-made, deep-rooted tree suddenly carries productive branches. Done at scale, tens of thousands of wild trees can be converted this way.

What grafting actually does

Grafting joins a shoot of one plant — the scion — onto the root system of another, so the two grow as a single tree. The rootstock supplies water, anchorage and vigour; the scion decides what fruit you get. Because a wild olive already has decades of root growth and drought hardiness beneath it, grafting a good oil variety onto its crown skips the slowest, riskiest years of an orchard's life. The graft is usually made in spring, when the bark lifts cleanly and the tree is running with sap, and the wild canopy is cut back hard so the new scions inherit the tree's energy.

Why it is slow, and why that is fine

Nobody grafts a hillside overnight. Each tree must be top-worked by hand, the grafts must take, and it is several years before the converted crown carries a real crop. A programme that grafts tens of thousands of trees over half a decade is working at exactly the pace the biology allows. But the pay-off is unusual: you end up with productive orchards on land that was never planted and never irrigated into being, built on root systems older and tougher than anything a nursery could sell you. For dry, marginal country, that is a genuinely elegant use of what is already there.

The catch worth naming

Grafting is not magic. A graft can fail to take; a wild tree scattered on a steep slope is far harder to tend, prune and harvest than a tidy planted row; and a converted crown still needs care for years before it earns its keep. Converting wild trees also does nothing on its own to solve the parts that decide whether the fruit becomes good oil — the mill, the timing of the harvest, the handling. A grafted hillside is a promising start, not a finished oil industry. But as a way to bootstrap an orchard from land that already carries the right species, it is hard to beat.
