90,000 wild olive trees grafted with European type since 2001

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Oil Development Board has grafted 90,000 wild olive trees with European type trees in Lower Dir district over the last five years, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Sikandar Hayat Bossan told the National Assembly during question hour on Thursday.

He said that the PODB had not established a separate project in the district, but it had been implementing a project titled ‘Rapid Conversion of Wild Olive in Oil Bearing Species’ in NWFP since 2001-02. He said the project would be completed in 2007-08. Bosan outlined various measures taken by the government to preserve fruits and vegetables and increase sea food production.

In a written reply to a question by MNA Jamila Ahmed, the minister said that the federal government had established four collection points and markets – two each in Balochistan and NWFP – for fresh fruits and vegetables equipped with cold storage facilities.

The government set up three agro-processing zones in Multan, Mirpurkhas and Sargodha for citrus fruits equipped with cold storage and allied facilities, he added.

Bosan said three date processing plants equipped with cold storage facilities had been set up at Turbat, DI Khan and Khairpur and an apple treatment plant at Quetta. The government had also allowed the duty-free import of cold storage machinery and refrigerating machines.

In a written reply to a question from Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur, he said that the government had drafted a national fisheries policy which would be implemented after its approval. He said the government had brought 60,000 hectares of land under aquaculture to increase seafood production. Marine Fisheries Department labs had been upgraded to improve quality control services to increase exports.

Health Minister Muhammad Naseer Khan told the National Assembly that a draft law for the establishment of a drug regulatory authority had been prepared and submitted to the Law Ministry for further review. To a supplementary question, he said that a bill to tackle quackery has been tabled in the National Assembly and Senate. app
