Tunisia January olive oil sales rise 65 pct

Tunisia’s olive oil exports grew 65 percent in January from a year earlier as it boosted output to meet rising world demand, official data showed on Friday.

Tunisia is North Africa’s top exporter of olive oil, which accounts for half of its farm exports. Those in turn represent more than 10 percent of the country’s total exports.

While the volume of olive oil sales abroad jumped to 26,500 tonnes in January, falling prices meant their value slipped to 97.6 million dinars from 98.8 million dinars.

More than 500,000 families depend on the labour-intensive olive oil industry in the country of 10 million, where 56 million olive trees cover around 1.6 million hectares.
