Cal Olive Oil Maker Wins Honors

For the first time ever, a US-based company now ranks among the world’s Top 10 premium olive oil producers.

Competing against 750 high-end oils produced in France, Italy, Spain, and Greece, Apollo Olive Oil earned the coveted spot during the prestigious OLIO 2006 international olive oil competition in Munich, Germany last month.

The annual event was sponsored by Der Feinschmecker – a leading food and wine publication in Europe – and conducted by the I Mastri Oleari Italian tasting panel.

“The entire experience is reminiscent of 1976 in Paris when California’s young wine industry stunned the world by finishing ahead of French wines,” said Darrell Corti, president of Corti Brothers. “Now, olive oil from California has given the world a new reason to try it and take notice.”

Corti serves as chairman of the internationally-recognized Los Angeles County Fair olive oil tasting competition.

Apollo Oil, founded in 1997, is produced on-site at the company’s in the company’s mill in Northern California’s Yuba County. The company is the only producer in the US currently using a highly specialized vacuum system that significantly limits exposure to oxygen during the milling process.

The Apollo estate is comprised of 3,000 older trees dating back to 1878, plus more than 4,000 younger trees, imported from the great oil-producing regions of the Mediterranean.

Collectively, the company’s groves produce some 44 olive varieties.
