Monte Testaccio: Rome’s Hill of Oil Jars
There is a hill in Rome that nature did not make and no one meant to build. Thirty-five metres high, it is composed almost entirely of shattered olive-oil jars — the discarded packaging of an empire, and, improbably, one of the finest archives of the ancient economy we possess.

Visit the Testaccio quarter of Rome and you can walk up a small mountain that is not made of rock. Monte Testaccio is an artificial hill, raised over roughly three centuries entirely out of broken pottery — specifically, the smashed remains of the enormous clay jars in which olive oil arrived to feed and light the ancient city. It is the largest heap of ancient packaging in the world, and standing at its foot is the most physical proof imaginable of a claim that is otherwise easy to doubt: that olive oil was traded at industrial scale two thousand years ago.
A mountain of amphorae
For roughly three centuries, the oil that ran the Roman world travelled in big clay vessels called amphorae. The dominant type on the hill is a fat, globular jar from Baetica — the Guadalquivir valley of southern Spain — and it makes up the great majority of the fragments. Crucially, these jars could not be reused for oil: the residue clinging inside went rancid and would spoil the next load. So once emptied they were worthless, smashed at the dockside and stacked. Over generations, the shards climbed into a hill of many millions of jars.
An archive hidden in the trash
Here is the part that turns a rubbish heap into treasure. Many of these jars were stamped and painted with information — the maker, the weight, the origin, sometimes a date and the names of officials who checked the cargo. Because the hill was built up in datable layers, archaeologists can read the whole trade almost like a ledger: where the oil came from, who shipped it, how the flow rose and fell year by year. The empire’s discarded packaging turns out to be one of the best windows we have onto how the ancient economy actually worked — a level of detail written records rarely give us.
Why it still matters
Monte Testaccio is a corrective to a comfortable modern assumption — that large-scale, long-distance trade in everyday goods is a recent invention. Stand at the base of this hill and you are looking at the leftovers of the first great oil trade, moved by sea and river across the width of an empire, jar by jar, until the empties formed a landmark you can still climb. The economics that made it necessary — the sheer cost and logistics of moving oil — echo down to the modern bottle, whose own true cost is still mostly about getting the oil from tree to table.
