Syria Produces 844 thousand Tons of Olive annually

Olive production in Syria reached at 844 thousand tons in 2005 and the number of olive trees mounted to nearly 80 millions where 841 traditional and modern olive pressures exist in the country, Director General of the Environmental Affairs Committee Akram Khouri reported Thursday.

Kouri was speaking at the 2nd regional workshop on “the integrated administration project of wastes resulting from pressing olives in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan’ held in Damascus and organized by the Ministry of Local Administration.

“The Project aims at putting down strategic and environmental criterion regarding olive production to insert substitutions that fit clean environment, deal with pollutants, develop technical and financial incentives to reach an integrated administration for wastes of olive pressures,” the Project’s National Director Marwan Demashki told SANA reporter.

The project, which lasts for 3 years, is financed by the European Union and implemented in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan.

Representatives from the European Union, UN Development Program, local administration ministries in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan and officials in the field of environment were present in the workshop.
