Los Olivos Jazz and Olive Festival planned for June 2

Lots of jazz music will share the stage with the olive industry when the arts-and-wine community of Los Olivos celebrates its heritage Saturday, June 2.

The third annual Los Olivos Jazz and Olive Festival, which is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Los Olivos, will run from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Principal jazz, olive and wine activities will be held in and adjacent to Lavinia Campbell Park in the center of the Los Olivos business district.

Those events include an afternoon of wine-tasting with nearly a score of Santa Ynez Valley vintners, tasting of olive-based dishes prepared by up to 30 amateur and professional chefs, and tastings and displays by several vendors of olive-based products.

In addition, plans include a silent art auction, a raffle, and sales of shirts, caps, tote bags and other items carrying the event’s popular jazz-and-olive logo.

Returning for a third jazz program engagement is the Tom Gastineau Quartet, featuring Gastineau as pianist and jazz-band leader. Also making a return appearance at the festival will be the Laura Schlieske Quintet.

Schlieske won the award for the best female vocalist at the 1996 Minnesota Music Awards, and she and her sister, Tina, have toured extensively with such artists as Hootie and the Blowfish, the Indigo Girls, Johnnie Lang and the late Stevie Ray Vaughn’s band.

These groups will play in Los Olivos’ central Lavinia Campbell Park during the afternoon of olive-dish and wine tastings. Professional chefs from New West Catering and The Chef’s Touch also are scheduled to give cooking demonstrations in the adjacent Grange Hall.

The first and second Jazz and Olive Festivals attracted several hundred participants, and event organizers anticipate this year’s tasting and entertainment schedule will draw significantly more visitors.

Tickets for the afternoon food and wine tastings and the jazz concerts in the park are $30 for adults, and $10 for children ages 11 and under. The tickets are available at the Book Loft, at Judith Hale Gallery in Los Olivos, from any Los Olivos Rotarian or they can be ordered in advance by calling 325-2345. Tickets may also be purchased at the event.

The Jazz and Olive Festival is a fundraiser for the 5-year-old Los Olivos Rotary Club. Proceeds will be used to support its many community and other service projects.

In its short history, the club has raised more than $44,000 to help acquire and maintain Lavinia Campbell Park in Los Olivos, and it also donated $10,000 to assist the construction of the new children’s playground at Sunny Fields Park on the north edge of Solvang.

It also has provided picnic tables, benches and wine-barrel trash receptacles for downtown Los Olivos, financed scholarships for local high school students, and assisted the fund raising and service projects of several local charitable organizations.

In addition, Los Olivos Rotarians have supported a number of international projects during the past year, including financial assistance to children’s homes in Romania and continuing support for the PACE girls’ educational program in India.

The club also has made significant financial contributions in recent weeks to the Santa Ynez Valley Hospital and to the Solvang Library.

More information about the June 2 Los Olivos Jazz and Olive Festival can be obtained by calling 325-2310, and information about the club and its activities can be obtained by calling president, Gabi Robbins at 688-3423.
