It has now become a true business. You can even buy them on the Internet.Their price ranges from three thousand to ten thousand euros.
It’s a “supermarket” of centuries-old olive trees, an illegal trade set up by criminals who steal trees on commission from Apulia, Calabria and other southern olive-growing regions and then send them up north to decorate private gardens and parks. It is a constantly growing phenomenon, which the CIA (Italian Farmers Confederation) denounces again asking for a law to block the absurd destruction as soon as possible. According to the CIA, intervention is needed to protect a priceless heritage which characterise regions such as Apulia, where there are over 50 million olive trees, the product of which is processed by over 250 thousand companies.
