Market growing for Marin olive oil producers, sellers

By Gary Klien,

The McEvoy Ranch is always finding new ways to squeeze money from olives.

This holiday season, the Northern Marin olive-oil producer is launching a new line of olive-oil based body products called “Verde.” The line includes body lotion, hand cream and a body scrub made from the same 100-percent organic oil the ranch sells for dining.

The Verde products carry an herbal scent developed by the ranch staff. In addition to olive oil, the products contain avocado oil, sesame oil, grapeseed oil and jojoba oil, plus chamomile and other natural botanicals.

“We’re continually coming up with alternative uses for the olive oil,” said Shari DeJoseph, the ranch’s resident orchard manager.

launched the operation in 1991, she faced skepticism that olive oil could be produced in Marin County. Fifteen years later, not only is the McEvoy Ranch thriving, but Marin is home to a scrappy olive oil industry.

Fresno Olive oil wins first medal

Fresno State Orchards Estate Reserve Olive Oil – California State University, Fresno’s very first pressing – won a bronze medal at the prestigious San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival.

Harvested and processed a year ago and bottled in March, the university’s olive oil joins Fresno State wines as an award-winning, student-produced agricultural product recognized in competition against established commercial products. With 7,000 bottles of olive oil run from 900 gallons in its first year, this year’s stock is nearly sold out.

Bottled and released in March with the Fresno State Orchards label, the Estate Reserve is a “blend of Arbequina, Arbosana and Koroneiki oils; fruity with a mild pungence that leaves a pleasing, persistent taste reminiscent of green herbs, tomato and banana,” said Gino Favagrossa, orchard manager, who directed the project.

The San Diego event is an international showcase of premier wine and spirits producers, chefs and culinary personalities that is produced by World of Wine Events to benefit the American Institute of Wine and Food Culinary Arts Scholarship program.

State Agriculture Minister Prabhulal Saini said olive would be cultivated on 210 hectares of Government land at 10 different locations — which correspond identically to soil and temperature in Israel — at a cost of Rs. 10 crore.

Board administrator Vipin Chandra Sharma signed the agreement with the representatives of Plasstro and Plasstro Plasson Industries. While the Board and Plasstro Plasson Industries will hold 50 per cent equity each in the newly-formed company, Plasstro will supply technical know-how for the project.
