Spanish company begins Chile’s largest Olive Oil business
By Naomi Bryant,
Spanish-owned Peinsa has announced plans to build Chile’s largest olive oil business at a cost of US$200 million. The project contemplates putting 5,000 hectares of olive plantations into production in Region VII.
The company began buying up land near Villaseca in January. It currently owns 3,200 hectares, with contracts to rent another 300. In February, Peinsa began preparing these lands for cultivation.
“During 2009 we will buy the hectares that we’re lacking,” said Peinsa general manager José Manuel Palazón. “Right now, all are our property is in Region VII, but we’ve gotten offers from other regions that we are studying.”
In October, Peinsa will begin the first stage of its operation by planting olives in 800 hectares of land. The company expects to complete the first stage by January 2009. Palazón said olive oil production won’t begin until May 2011 and that the company hopes to sell 80 percent of its olive oil in bulk.
Recent development in Chile’s olive oil sector have attracted many companies like Peisna. Most of the companies that invest in Chile’s olive oil industry are looking to diversify their holdings. Peina is no exception: its primary focus is Spanish real estate.
Chile now has 10,000 hectares of planted olive trees, with 5,500 hectares being harvested for full production. Oil production hit the 200 million liter mark for the first time this year – with most production going to markets in the United States, Brazil, and Mexico.

Jordan’s Olive production expected to drop by 40 per cent this season
The Kingdom’s olive production is expected to drop by 40 per cent this season, yielding some 124,800 tonnes, preliminary Agriculture Ministry estimates indicate.
Known for its “alternate bearing habit”, under which olive production peaks in alternate years, this season’s produce was expected to yield more than last year, when the country harvested around 243,500 tonnes of olives, of which 44,848 tonnes were allocated for domestic consumption and 198,683 tonnes were used to produce olive oil.
Director of the Agriculture Ministry’s olive unit Jamal Batsh said weather conditions and water shortages contributed to the drop in this year’s productivity.
“This season’s decrease in production was affected by the low quantities of rainfall in different parts of the Kingdom, in addition to heat waves that prevailed during the flowering times in areas dependent on rainwater, which account for 77 per cent of land cultivated with olives,” Batsh told The Jordan Times on Tuesday.

California Olive Ranch Olive oil plant takes shape

A state-of-the-art olive oil processing plant has come to Artois and is set to do some test processing this fall.
The 25,000 square-foot plant is located on County Road 35 about two miles west of this small farming community, and its owners promise it will help make Glenn County known as a renowned region for quality olive oil.
It is run by California Olive Ranch headquartered in Oroville and is to be built in phases during the next two to three years.
Vice-president of sales and marketing Alan Greene said his company came to Glenn County because it could not find additional acreage in Oroville to plant more trees, and it decided to put in a processing plant here because it would be closer to the harvest.
Once the processing plant is complete, it should process 80 tons of olives per hour, Greene said, the equivalent of three truck loads of the fruit per hour.
The modern milling equipment comes from Italy, he said, and it uses less water than older machines.
