Olive oil part II: the Mediterranean
By Evie Barkin,
The first settlers predominantly used olive oil for their cooking needs because it was the oil available to them. Due to necessary growing conditions, olive oil comes from a relatively small area of the world. While indigenous to the eastern Mediterranean, olive trees have also been cultivated in the Middle East. Olives are grown in the Mediterranean, Spain, Italy, Greece and France.
Today we also get them from South Africa, Australia and California. Each country’s olives have a distinctive flavor, because of their varied climates. The American oils, for instance, are milder, and more fruity than their European counterparts.
Champion olive oil from Franschhoek
THIS country’s finest olive oil comes from Franschhoek in the Boland. Waterfall River Farm beat twenty contenders in the Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition with an oil made from its maiden vintage.
The results of the first SA Olive Awards were announced last month at Laborie in Paarl. Winners were awarded in three categories: Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Table Olives and Achiever of the Year. According to the organisers, SA Olive, it is the first table olive competition held locally and the first time that a person or entity has been recognised for outstanding achievement.
Morgenster’s green Nocellara olives were awarded the Alfa Laval trophy for Best Table Olives entered in the competition.
The SA Olive Achiever of the Year award went to Gerrie Duvenage, who has been involved with the local industry for the past 17 years. Duvenage was recognised for playing a pivotal role in all aspects of the olive industry making significant contributions to each key segment of the value chain.
Richard and Silvana Atkinson of Waterfall River Farm walked off with the Consol trophy for Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The winning oil, made from their organic orchard, is a blend of Frantoio, Leccino and Coratina and was described as “very well-balanced with lots of olive fruitiness on the aroma”.
Choose the Right Olive Oil for the Job
Characteristics vary with different blends and methods of preparation, giving a variety of flavors and colors.
By Marlene Parrish,
Extra-virgin olive oils can be confusing and good oil isn’t cheap, and instead of finishing a bottle at a sitting as you would a bottle of wine, a bottle of extra-virgin olive oil might stay in the kitchen for weeks, even months. So how is a person supposed to know what to buy, how it tastes and how best to use it?
Searching for the answer led us to olive oil expert Jeff Robbins, owner of Embarcadero Inc., an importer and distributor of Spanish olive oils. Robbins might be a savvy businessman, but first and foremost he’s a teacher, and an entertaining and opinionated one to boot. Just the guy we needed.
But before discussing the flavor nuances of various oils, you need to understand how they are graded, according to Robbins.
Olive Oil May Boost Heart Health
Food containing olive oil can carry labels saying it may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, the government says, citing limited evidence from a dozen scientific studies about the benefits of monounsaturated fats.
As long as people don`t increase the number of calories they consume daily, the Food and Drug Administration confirmed a reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease when people replace foods high in saturated fat with the monounsaturated fat in olive oil.
That means a change as simple as sauteing food in two tablespoons of olive oil instead of butter may be healthier for your heart.
