L’olive, reine de la Provence en hiver

De décembre à janvier en Provence, alors que la nature hiverne, l’olive est reine. Et, chaque 27 janvier, les habitants de Manosque (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) célèbrent la Fête de l’huile nouvelle.

Dans la région des Mées, à 50 km au nord d’Aix-en-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône), les agriculteurs s’affairent dans les rangées d’arbres. De longs draps de plastique noir sont étalés sur le sol, masquant en partie les troncs majestueux des oliviers. Le poète Jean Giono décrivait “le plaisir de toucher les olives grasses et d’en avoir les mains pleines” ; aujourd’hui les branches sont “peignées” au râteau par des hommes juchés sur des échelles, et les fruits tombent les uns après les autres. Ils composent un camaïeu allant du jaune au brun, en passant par différentes teintes de rouge. Ce sont des aglandau, la plus fréquente des variétés d’olives dans les Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

Sales of olive oil have gone up 39% in the last five years and for the first time outstrip all other oils. Why?

The Mediterranean diet has long been hailed as cutting the risk of a heart attack, with olive oil hailed as the key ingredient.

Scientists believe they have pinpointed the micronutrients in the oil that make it a good heart protector and say introducing it to a diet can have a significant impact.

New research suggests that Britons are taking the advice on board. Annual sales have hit £104m – up 39% since 2000, according to market analysts Mintel.

More money is spent on olive oil than standard oils, such as vegetable and sunflower oil, according to the Edible Oils report.

Californian olive, Frost might nip garden, but crops are OK

It’s not technically winter yet, but you wouldn’t know that with frost on the windshields in morning and the trip to the morning shower including being able to see your breath.

Yet, while humans are bundling up, area crops have not been affected by the chilly temperatures.

Bigger threats to the industry include lack of labor and pest control.

Bill Kreuger, farm adviser for UC Davis Cooperative Extension in Glenn County, said its normal to have temperatures of 25-26 degrees this time of year.

Any olives that are still in the trees might experience some shrivel, but that’s not that big of a problem since most olives in the area are harvested for oil production, Kreuger explained.

Citrus is another later-picked crop, but the sugar in the fruit acts like antifreeze, Kreuger said. The number of orchards planted in citrus has dwindled over the years. Glenn County only has about 600-700 acres of navel orchards and a handful of mandarin plantings, he continued.

Huile d’Olive: L’ONH joue la transparence

Afin d’éviter l’inflation des prix de l’huile d’olive pendant la saison agricole 2005-2006 et laquelle Office National d’Huile a été partie prenante, dans le sens où il a pratiqué un prix plancher de 5,5 DT/ le litre et a provoqué une escalade des prix, par un mouvement acheteur, l’ONH joue la carte de l’information pour la saison 2006-2007, et ce en publiant des indices et des indicateurs tout en évitant d’intervenir sur le marché, laissant les prix évoluer selon l’offre et la demande.
