ST donates trees to Kennedy Grove

Nearly 300 olive trees were donated and planted on Sunday 12 November by ST Microelectronics and its employees at the Kennedy Grove, Salina Bay, to support the local 34U afforestation campaign.

Every year, ST contributes hundreds of trees to local communities for groves, playing-fields and schools. To date, around 11,000 trees have been donated, reinforcing the drive towards more greenery in Malta.

Les huileries de Kabylie ne tourneront pas cette année

Sur un parc de plus de 600 huileries dont dispose la wilaya de Tizi Ouzou, seules quelques unités ont ouvert leurs portes pour cette campagne de trituration des olives, faute de «grains à se mettre sous la meule», tant la récolte oléicole de cette année s’annonce peu prometteuse, pour cause des effets conjugués de la sécheresse et de la destruction des oliveraies potentielles par la tempête de neige de l’hiver 2005, indique-t-on.

Zarzis, festival de l’olivier, un programme original et diversifié

Depuis le début du mois en cours, la ville de Zarzis, surnommée capitale de l’olivier, vit au rythme de la campagne oléicole. Une production de 6.000 tonnes d’olives est prévue cette saison, soit un peu plus que l’année précédente. Les huileries connaissent ainsi une activité intense.

Olive oil tourism on rise in Italy

The growing interest in quality olive oil has resulted in a boom in farm tourism with more than two million people a year now visiting oil mills to buy their oil straight from the source.

According to the Italian olive oil producers’ consortium Unaprol, olive oil tourism this year will generate more than 1.8 billion euros (2.3 billion U.S. dollars) in business.

Unaprol attributed the popularity of this form of tourism to “the increasing interest in quality and authenticity of olive oil, which today can only be guaranteed by buying the oil at its source or with the PDO (protected designation of origin) label.”

Italy:Olive Oil from Florence gets ‘DOP’ Certification

Florence, Nov. 20 – The Agriculture Ministry has issued a decree (eventually published on the Italian Official Journal) granting the ‘Dop’ certification (denomination of protected origin) to the extra virgin olive oil produced in the hills around Florence.
