[Italia] CIA* Reports Centenary Olive Tree Trafficking

It has now become a true business. You can even buy them on the Internet.Their price ranges from three thousand to ten thousand euros.

It’s a “supermarket” of centuries-old olive trees, an illegal trade set up by criminals who steal trees on commission from Apulia, Calabria and other southern olive-growing regions and then send them up north to decorate private gardens and parks. It is a constantly growing phenomenon, which the CIA (Italian Farmers Confederation) denounces again asking for a law to block the absurd destruction as soon as possible. According to the CIA, intervention is needed to protect a priceless heritage which characterise regions such as Apulia, where there are over 50 million olive trees, the product of which is processed by over 250 thousand companies.

Easy to be impressed with pressed olive oil

Olives have different tastes, depending on the climate in which they are grown, the soil, the type and age of tree and the degree of ripeness at which they are picked. This means that olive oils have different tastes as well. For olive oil, you can add in the method in which the oil is pressed (hot versus cold press), storage and the end result desired by the producers.

When olives are ripe, they are picked by hand to limit damage to the fruit. Olives for oil are taken immediately to an olive oil mill where they are pressed. They must be pressed immediately, or they will begin to oxidize and ferment, yielding an unsalable product.

Virgin olive oil is pressed, or extracted, without heat, additives or solvents, and it has a lush, full taste and velvety mouthfeel. It can be used immediately.

Old olive mill’s new lease on life

Museum of Industrial Oil Production on Lesvos, funded by Piraeus Bank, is now open to visitors

The Museum of Industrial Oil Production on the northern Aegean island of Lesvos is the fourth such achievement by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, which has launched a network of museums focusing on technology and industry.

The network’s projects kicked off with the Silk Museum in Soufli and then continued with the Water Power Museum in Dimitsana and Sparta’s Olive Museum.

The Lesvos museum was recently inaugurated by President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias. The ambitious program has more museum openings on its agenda: The Brick and Tile Factory in Volos is scheduled to open at the end of the month; the Marble Work Museum in Tinos’s Pirgos is to open in December, while the Museum of Traditional Trades, at Lake Stymfalia, is expected to open early next year.

Growers say olive oil crop is slipping

Extreme weather, relentless fruit flies and a bumper crop last year have contributed to a meager harvest this fall for Mother Lode olive oil producers.

“The current olive crop (in California) is down 65 percent,” said Tuolumne County Agricultural Commissioner Paul Rainey.

“This is the leanest crop this area has seen in 25 years,” said Dennis Raymond, 60, who founded Sierra Olive Oil Co. in Chinese Camp 12 years ago.

His nephew, Dave Raymond, who makes olive oil for the family-owned business, said the company has pushed its harvest back to mid-November or December this year in hopes of getting even half of what was harvested last year.

According to Calaveras Olive Oil owner Ed Rich, olives trees, much like apple trees, produce hearty fruit every other year. These, he said, are called “alternate bearing” trees.

“We had a great crop last year,” Rich said, noting that he fully expected that this year’s crop would not be as good.
