Grupe and others try to revive production of oil in California

Fritz Grupe, perhaps best known as the Stockton builder of Brookside and other major projects, never planned to get into land development.

He recently recalled that as a college junior he told his father: “I want to be a farmer. I have no interest in real estate.”

But after graduation and joining his dad in working the family’s 250-acre spread, it soon became apparent that the ranch was too small to generate enough money.

“That wasn’t enough to make a living, so I moved to town and became a real estate agent,” Grupe said.

Now, nearly five decades later, the farmer leads a real estate empire that encompasses commercial, apartment and single-family home construction – having created 10 master-planned communities and more than 50,000 homes in 35 cities nationwide since 1966 – real estate brokerage and property management.

But he’s also remained in agriculture, raising Angus breeding stock, cherries, apples and winegrapes. And his latest venture – cultivating 220 acres of olive trees – is part of a new agricultural trend that he and others hope will prove the rebirth of olive-oil production in California.

Olive orchards proliferate in Spain

By Martha Proctor,

Of the so many things to savor about our recent trip to Spain, I was struck by the dominant crop on the arid land. As our 747 approached Madrid, we looked down and saw huge orchards of olive and almond trees stretching for miles.

The fruits of both trees permeate the Mediterranean diet, which is based fundamentally on olive oil. Green olives and/or olive oil appear prominently and abundantly in appetizers, tapas, vegetables, main dishes, salads and pasta. Almonds are used to thicken sauces, enhance the flavor of main dishes, soups, vegetables and desserts.

With more than 300 million olive trees, Spain grows more olive trees than any other country and is the world’s leading olive and olive oil producer and exporter. Modern production techniques allow a tree to reach maturity after five years; however, maximum maturity isn’t reached until after 40 years. After 140 years, productivity declines, though thousand-year-old trees can bear rich loads of fruit.

Italy;Marche, Coldiretti launches label proposal for origin of Olive Oil

On Sunday, Coldiretti Ascoli-Fermo will collect signatures in Grottammare in support of labels indicating the origin of olive oil. “Aside from a DOP olive oil (from protected origin), three traditional food oils, an IGP (protected geographic indication) coming soon and two oil cities, over half of oil in the Marche region is produced in the province of Ascoli Piceno,” explained the president Marco Maroni.

“This is a patrimony that must be defended from those who think they can use the Made in Italy name by selling oil obtained from olives coming from who knows where. This is a transparency issue for consumers, but also for defending the work of agricultural companies.” The start of mobilization for the oil label will take place as part of the province’s traditional day of “Thanksgiving.” (AGI)
