A Thousand Wrestlers and Two Tons of Olive Oil

Every summer for the last 650 years, Turkish men have gathered to see who was the strongest, fastest and slickest of them all. It’s called Kirkpinar, and it’s the biggest oil wrestling competition in the world.

The well-muscled men face off in the middle of a grassy field, as a crowd of thousands looks on eagerly. Slowly, methodically, they cover their chests and legs with olive oil — first with the right hand, then with the left. Then they take turns oiling each others’ backs.

Then the fun begins: Turkey’s annual Kirkpinar festival, the highlight of the Turkish sporting calendar, is a three-day orgy of oil wrestling. Known as “yagli gures” (pronounced “yaw-luh gresh”), the slippery sport is considered by some to be the Turkish national game.

NZ Olive industry delivers the good oil

By Jacqueline Smith,

Jim Syme, president of Olives New Zealand, expects local olive growers will produce around 220,000 litres of olive oil this year, up from 185,000 litres in 2007.

A bumper year for New Zealand olive oil has some in the industry predicting it will follow wine as one of our most promising exports.

Just three decades after the first commercial groves were planted, producers are celebrating high yields, world titles and new markets.

They say the delicate condiment is tracing the footsteps of the country’s most successful sauvignon blanc and pinot noir labels.

California crop estimate at just 65,000 tons

By Julie R. Johnson,

The Sevillano olive crop in California is doing poorly this year with little fruit on the tree,

As olive growers in the state continue to struggle in an industry fraught with problems such as the olive fruit fly, foreign imports, and labor issues, it was unwelcome news to learn this year’s Sevillano olive crop in California is forecast to be one of the poorest on record.

Ross Turner, an olive grower in Corning, and a member of the California Olive Committee (COC), after attending the committee’s annual meeting in Modesto on Tuesday, said a bad freeze in April and dehydrating north winds have had a devastating impact on a large part of this year’s Sevillano crop in the Sacramento Valley. The committee’s forecast is based on reports from growers and the cannery field men from Musco Family Olives in Tracy, and Bell-Carter Foods in Corning.

“The Manzanillo crop appears to be good, but the Sevillano is in bad shape,” Turner said.

The COC is forecasting a total crop estimate of 65,000 total-tonnage, including all varieties of canning olives in the state.
