With cold weather comes chapped lips, dry skin and brittle hair. But thanks to the healing properties of olive oil, these inconveniences can be easily and inexpensively remedied.
There are many ways olive oil can optimize your beauty. To heal cracked lips, dab a little on before going to bed. Apply it to any dry part of your body that needs moisturizing. You can also add up to ¼ cup to your bathwater along with a few drops of lavender essential oil for a relaxing soak. This will leave you and your skin feeling soft and beautiful every time – not to mention the added bonus of a good night’s rest!
Give your hair a nice treat by warming a few tablespoons of the oil. After applying, cover your head with a shower cap (a plastic bag will do) and leave on for about half an hour. (This is a great time to catch up on your reading.)
If you want to reap all of olive oil’s benefits, use it in your daily cooking. Make home-made vinaigrettes and/or drizzle it over your meals. Taking this healing oil internally actually changes our cellular structure so it’s a great anti-aging weapon. You’ll definitely enjoy the rewards as it emanates through your hair, skin, and nails. You’ll be beautiful, naturally.

Scrap import duty on olive oil in India
The Indian Olive Association has urged the Center to abolish the 45 per cent Customs duty on olive oil.
“The import duty makes olive oil prohibitively expensive in India,” said a press release from V.N. Dalmi, President of the association. Run-up to Budget 2008-09
It pointed out that currently a 45 per cent Customs duty was imposed on virgin oil and 40 per cent on refined and pomace olive oil. “This rate is very high considered that non-olive producing countries such as China and Taiwan only impose 10 and 8 per cent import duty,” he said.
Considering the numerous health benefits of olive oil, the Centre should scrap the import duty, making it available to a much larger section of the population.
He added that at present one litre of extra virgin olive oil costs Rs 720 (including a 45 per cent import duty). If the duty is reduced to 16 per cent, the price could be brought down to Rs 600, and if the duty is scrapped altogether, it can be retailed at Rs 520 a litre.

Good Samaritan Drug Rehabilitation Centre helps Spanish addicts with Olives
A Spanish rehabilitation centre is using olive harvesting as part of its therapy to help substance addicts.
Francis Arjona, founder of the Good Samaritan Drug Rehabilitation Centre near Pozoblanco in Southern Spain, has had a number of run-ins with drug dealers since he began working with addicts. “I have had a couple of knives at my throat and some guns held at me,” he says.
But despite the dangers posed by the dealers he says that the addicts who come to him for help are highly respectful. “I have had addicts as guests in my home but they have never taken anything,” he says.
Set on the side of a hill down a dusty potholed track surrounded by 800 olive trees the centre sits in a tranquil spot. But from November to January, when the annual olive harvest takes place, it becomes a hive of activity. During this period the 30-bed building is full with volunteers from across Europe, including England, joining the recovering addicts in the harvest.

Olive business blossoms
By Andrea Bennett,
When Clifford C. Graber first came here from Indiana, he lived in a tent on his land.
He built his house and planted citrus trees as the burgeoning industry that would later define the region was catching on more than a century ago.
It was a different fruit, though, that would occupy Graber’s interest, delight his palette and eventually, inspire Ontario’s oldest business – Graber Olive House.
Ranchers at the time picked olives that flourished in the area, experimenting with home-curing recipes to share with neighbors and friends.
Graber’s recipe, which remains a family secret today, was a huge hit. And in 1894, the enterprise was born.
In 1943, Graber’s son, Robert, purchased the company from his father and continued the tradition. His own son, Cliff, 70, has been running the show since 1973.
The manzanillo olives have a trademark complex and buttery flavor that comes from picking only the ripe fruit from the trees.
