Olive oil protects against heart attack, stroke

Portuguese researchers have identified a vital component of olive oil that gives greatest protection from heart attack and stroke.

Lead researcher Fatima Paiva-Martins from University of Porto has discovered an antioxidant called DHPEA-EDA that protects red blood cells from damage more than any other part of olive oil.

“These findings provide the scientific basis for the clear health benefits that have been seen in people who have olive oil in their diet,” said Paiva-Martins.

During the study, research team led by Paiva-Martins compared the effects of four related polyphenolic compounds on red blood cells subjected to oxidative stress by a known free radical generating chemical.

Heart disease is caused partly by reactive oxygen, including free radicals, acting on LDL or “bad” cholesterol and resulting in hardening of the arteries.

Red blood cells are particularly susceptible to oxidative damage because they are the body’s oxygen carriers.

They found that DHPEA-EDA was the most effective and protected red blood cells even at low concentrations.

Cook’s Books: Olive oil, the American way

By Amanda Gold,

Purchasing olive oil these days can be a dizzying feat. Is it best to go for the more traditional Italian stuff? A particular varietal? Fruity or peppery? Mild? Robust?

book-olive-oil-the-american-wayAccording to local chef and author Fran Gage, however, keeping it local – or at least domestic – isn’t a bad idea. In her new book, “The New American Olive Oil,” Gage narrows the choices by demystifying – and celebrating – American olive oil.

Best known for her now-closed Fran Gage Patisserie Francaise in San Francisco and previous books including “Chocolate Obsession” and “A Sweet Quartet: Sugar, Almonds, Eggs and Butter,” Gage says that olive oil wasn’t a fat she was familiar with until later in life.

But after joining the California Olive Oil Council as a tasting panelist, she says her knowledge has increased “a hundredfold.”

It’s clear after reading the book.

Australia: Good oil goes big at Boort

By Sandra Godwin,

ONE of the world’s biggest single-site olive groves opened the gates to visitors last week to celebrate being named Olive Grower of the Year.

colossul-olive-machine-harvest Timbercorp’s 2777ha grove at Boort, managed by Boundary Bend Estate, was recognised by the Australian Olive Association for pioneering the production of quality olive oil on a large scale.

Development of Boort grove began in 2000 and Boundary Bend, which established its own groves in 1998, took over management in 2004.

Australian Olive Association president Paul Miller said the companies used modern technology and know-how when they began operations.

Everyone involved had to overcome many hurdles, Mr Miller said.

“They’ve improved pollination, addressed soil variability, run it very lean, yet they’re still producing fantastic quality oil and lots of it,” he said.
