Brazil Discovers Olive Oil

by Joel Santos Guimarães

Last year, Brazilian imports of the product totaled US$ 170 million. Of this total, 54% came from Portugal. And the forecast is for growth to continue as, this year, expansion of 20% is expected in comparison with 2007.

Two reasons are given for the market growth: the first is that Brazilians are seeking more and more sustainable products to consume. And it is known that olive oil helps prevent cardiovascular diseases as it reduces cholesterol levels.

The second, in the evaluation of the president of the Brazilian Association of Producers, Importers and Traders of Olive Oil (Oliva), Armando Reis Filho, is the price of olive oil:

“Different from soy and other kinds of oil, whose prices have risen due to global hikes, the tendency for consumers of olive oil has been the opposite. Product prices have either dropped or remained stable.”

These factors could be good for Arab producers of olive oil, who could become alternative suppliers of the product to companies in the country, increasing their participation in the Brazilian market, which is currently minute.

Healthy Olives Can Now Be Grown In Salty Water

Varieties of olive trees recently tested by researchers could be cultivated with moderate saline water irrigation.

The olive’s reputation as a health food is being borne out by modern science, as studies of olive-consuming Mediterranean peoples have shown. To keep the world’s olive lovers satisfied, an intensive wave of olive planting has occurred in the past decade in many parts of the world.

Traditionally, olives have been cultivated in the Mediterranean region. But fresh water is becoming increasingly hard to come by in semiarid areas, and irrigation of most new olive plantations is often accomplished with low-quality sources of water that contain relatively high levels of salt.

The relationship between the use of “saline water” and olive cultivation has been actively studied for many years. According to Professor Zeev Wiesman, Department of Biotechnology Engineering at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, it is well-known that saline conditions can limit the development of olives, mainly because the salty water interferes with the olives’ root system and causes “toxic accumulation of chloride and sodium ions on the leaves.”
