An old oil mill abandoned since 1970 in Eleochori, near Kavala in northeastern Greece, has been restored to house the area’s Olive Museum, where visitors can learn about Greek history and folklore down through the centuries through olive products.

The oil mill, built in 1950, had a direct impact on the region, signaling an era of development for western Kavala.

Olive oil prices set to decline in India

With the Centre reducing the customs duty on all grades of olive oil to 7.5 per cent from the previous rates of 45 per cent on virgin olive oil and 40 per cent on refined olive oil, prices of olive oil are likely to come down by up to 15 per cent on the stocks imported after April 1.

According to Indian Olive Association (IOA) President V. N. Dalmia, the benefits of reduced customs duty would be visible in the next few weeks provided the international prices remain stable. The IOA had sent representations to the Government to reduce the duty on olive oil based on its numerous health benefits and the absence of a domestic market , he added.

“We are gratified that the importance of olive oil is being recognised.

“Due to the high rate of import duty, its consumption is restricted to high-end consumers as the average consumer finds it too expensive,” said Mr. Dalmia.

Pointing out that the fall in prices of olive oil is subject to exchange rates remaining stable, Mr. Dalmia said much of the benefit of the duty reduction had been wiped out due to the recent appreciation of the euro.

“We will now raise this issue with the Government and ask it to classify extra virgin olive oil, which is raw in nature, with crude oils that attract no duty ,” he added.

Florida: Marion couple looks forward to seeing olive crop come in

By Lora E. Ide,

Beginning April 17, from 8 a.m. to noon, and each Thursday thereafter, there will be a farmers’ market at On Top Of the World. To learn more, visit the Web site www.circlesquarecommons.com/
farmersmarket/index.html.

After 12 years of growing the exotic trees, more often seen in California or in Mediterranean countries, the two believe they are getting close.

Some of their 1,200 trees have sprouted buds that turn into tiny white flowers. But unlike other fruit trees commonly seen in Florida, it’s a long process from flowering tree to edible olives.

“You pick olives off the tree, but you have to prepare them before you can eat them,” Cary Cloud said.

The olives must be put into correct amounts of rock salt, olive oil and other ingredients and be tasted after about six weeks. They continue to cure until they taste right and then are pickled for storage and later use.

The Clouds, who live north of Dunnellon, named their nursery Pepper Hill Growers. They have traveled to Europe to research olive growing and curing processes.

Turkish police seize 400 kilos of heroin

Turkish security forces seized 400 kilogrammes (880 pounds) of heroin hidden in vats of olives on a truck headed for Europe, the Anatolia news agency reported on Sunday.

The truck was detained at the Kapikule border post with Bulgaria after investigators became aware of the imminent transfer of the shipment on Wednesday, the report said.

Sniffer dogs found the drug hidden in containers of olives. Investigators had been monitoring the olive exporting company for several months, according to the Turkish news agency.

Turkey is a major transit point for drugs heading for western Europe from Asia. The country’s biggest seizure was in February 2007 when officers found 565kg (1,243 pounds) of heroin.

Indian Olive Association welcomes duty reduction

The Indian Olive Association has welcomed the sharp reduction in import duties on the product, saying it would bring down prices by 15 percent and make the product available to a larger number of consumers.

indian olive oil association welcomes duty reduction“We are gratified that the importance of olive oil is being recognised and that our efforts are bearing fruit soon after the launch of our association,” association president V.N. Dalmia said in a statement.

The Indian government earlier this week reduced the customs duty on all grades of olive oil to 7.5 percent from the previous 45 percent on virgin olive oil and 40 percent each on refined olive oil and olive pomace oil.

The association had submitted a representation to the government before the budget for fiscal 2008-09 was presented in February seeking the total abolition of customs tariffs on olive oil imports.

The association cited olive oil’s numerous health benefits and the absence of a domestic market for the product in India in support of its demand.
