Cortopassi plans major olive oil expansion

The domestic olive oil business shows such potential that Cortopassi Partners plans to increase production to 12 times more than it currently does at its plant southeast of Lodi.

The San Joaquin County Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing tonight on Cortopassi’s use permit application to expand its plant. If approved, Cortopassi will increase its production from 50,000 gallons to 600,000 gallons during the next 10 years.

The plant would produce olive oil about 40 days during the harvesting season each year, according to a staff report from the county’s community development department. Olives will not be canned there

International Council of Olive’s meeting will be held in Iran

Thirty-first meeting of this council will be held in Tehran in the month Khordad for two days.

(IANA) – “After this meeting, which will be held with participation of representatives and specialists of member countries of this Council, an intensive training course regarding non-irrigated cultivation of Olive in Iran will be held,” said the executive manager of International Council of Olive, according to the Public Relations of Islamic Republic of Iran’s embassy in Madrid.

“Visiting the specialized fairs of Olive in Tehran and leading gardens in Shiraz will be of lateral programs of the meeting,” continued Mohammad Ahmad Asbitari.

He referred also to the efforts of Iran in developing the cultivation of Olive and announced the readiness of secretariat of the council for cooperation in all fields with Iran.

Seyyed Davoud Salehi, Iran’s Ambassador to Spain announced the readiness of Iranian embassy in Madrid for cooperation to successful holding of the meeting.

Pakistan: Govt planning to boost olive oil production

Realising importance of olive oil, the government is planning to encourage its production for meeting local requirements as well as for the export purposes.

An official in the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock told Daily Times here on Saturday there is a lot of potential for olive cultivation in the country.

According to an estimate, if eight million wild olive trees present in different provinces were grafted and converted into the productive olive then there was a potential of earning a maximum of one billion dollars annually.

Edible oil and oilseeds are the second biggest import item after petroleum products and the government has to be spent about $1 billion every year on the import of edible oil and oilseeds.

Local consumption of edible oils was around 2.795 million tonnes of which 70 percent was met through imports, the official added. The local production of edible oil accounts for about 30 percent of national requirement.

Port Lincoln, South Australia: Record olive harvest expected

The region’s olive trees are bursting with fruit this year, after a low yield in 2007 due to drought.

The olive industry is looking up for Eyre Peninsula, with a record amount of olives, according to olive press operator and olive grower Peter Green.

Mr Green started harvesting his olives with the mechanical harvester he part-owns last week.

“Everyone’s back on track from last year’s Australia-wide phenomenon of low fruit,” he said.

“This year we’ve got record fruit – you can see it weighing the branches down.”

Mr Green said he expected 50 or more tonnes of olives region-wide this year, in comparison to last year’s 30 tonnes.
