Mineral oil in land of the olive

By Nikos Xydakis,

Although many jokes have been made about the sunflower oil contamination scandal, it is no laughing matter.

olive oil healthIt is not even an isolated incident, because along with the contaminated oil from Ukraine, we are also seeing large quantities of sunflower oil from Belgium – the heart of the European Union – being withdrawn from the market for being “potentially dangerous.”

There is only one conclusion to be drawn from this chain of mishaps: The cycle of trade, distribution and manufacture is governed by criminal indifference and incompetence. Those responsible are also numerous: First and foremost there are the manufacturers, who are either incapable or reluctant to check the quality of their raw materials and certainly unwilling to inform the public of any mistakes in good time.

My Oil of Choice, Olive Oil!

By June M. Lay,

bottle of olive oilMy oil of choice is Olive Oil, because while a fat is a fat when we refer to calories, not all fats (including oils) are equal when we refer to our health.

I’ve chosen Olive Oil because it leads by a margin when we compare it to other oils that are good for our health! I also think olive oil leads in taste too, but more on this later. Fat is a necessary nutrient for our health so we can’t live without it.

Fat also makes our food tastier, and since we have a satiety center for fat in our brain, it gives us a sense of fullness.

Why is olive oil my choice in oils? Let’s begin with a little background on fats.

Live Longer: Eat An Olive Oil-Rich Diet

By Dr. Erin Elster,

Anyone who has travelled to the Mediterranean can tell you about the wonderful, healthy food in that region. Much of the health benefits and flavor are due to the generous use of olive oil on salads, pasta, vegetables, fish, and almost anything else.

Researchers are learning that people who consume olive oil regularly – especially in place of unhealthy fats such as animal fats, hydrogenated oils, and vegetable oils like corn oil – have much lower rates of heart disease, athersclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and asthma.

Olive oil is made from the crushing and then the subsequent pressing of olives. It is a natural juice that preserves the taste, aroma, and nutrients of the olive fruit. Extra virgin olive oil – derived from the first pressing of the olives – has the most delicate flavor and the most health benefits.
